Although modern indices are fairly standardized, with alphabetically organized entries of subjects linked to the numbers of pages on which they appear, early modern indices were not so regularized. Although the index did serve to point readers to locations in a book, its organization can also give us insight into how the author or editor conceives of the book’s utility.
