main printed feature: press figure

In 18th-century American and English printing, small numbers known as press figures were used to identify the worker who set the page in type. They are usually placed in the direction line of the verso of a page so that they are not confused with signature marks.

Hobart, Reports, 1724 (K4v)

There's a lot going on here: reports of Judge Hobart's cases, printed marginal notes referring to other cases, different typefaces, running titles in the headlines noting the cases discussed on each page, and a press figure at the very bottom.

Theobald, Double Falshood, 1728 (B7v)

At the bottom of this page is the small press figure "3."
